End the Needless Detention of Children in Prisons
Published on 1 June 2024We stand strong with the thousands of children and minors across Cambodia who are locked up in overcrowded and under-resourced prisons. We call on the relevant authorities to stop the excessive detention of children and minors in prison, and to immediately and consistently use alternatives to detention before resorting to imprisonment.
To mark Children's Day 2024, LICADHO has released a video to highlight the increasing number of children and minors living in prison, rather than being at home with their families or studying at school. We call on authorities to bail all eligible minors, mothers with young children, and pregnant people; use alternatives to detention in the Juvenile Justice Law; guarantee a lawyer to all those accused; and improve prison conditions to ensure that all those detained, including children and minors, have access to adequate nutrition, healthcare, family visits, and age-appropriate development opportunities.
