The Bird of First June
Published on 1 June 2015In the lead-up to June 1st, International Children’s Day, LICADHO is releasing a music video, “The Bird of First June,” advocating respect for the four baskets of children’s rights, as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC): the right to survival, the right to protection, the right to development, and the right to participation. The video was conceptualized by youth Child Protection Group members in Phnom Penh, and the song was sung over a popular local soundtrack. The youth were inspired to make the video to raise awareness amongst children of their basic rights, and to encourage adults to take care of children.
English translation of the song:
1. Egrets fly across the river, bats fly across the forest. All children must have rights all the time: first, the right to live; second, the right to be protected; third, the right to participate; fourth, the right to develop.
2. Egrets fly across the river, bats fly across the village. Children need to be happy and free. We should educate them, take care of them and value their rights.
3. Egrets fly across the river, bats fly across the lake. Children expect that their four baskets of rights should not be abused. These four rights should be practiced.
4. Egrets fly across the river, bats fly across the canal. We will never give up protecting child rights by encouraging communities to monitor all rights.
